Nick Cannon,  the adorable host of “America’s Got Talent,” recently told People Magazine he will “absolutely not” let his twins (with wife Mariah Carey), Moroccan and Monroe, follow in their parents famous footsteps.

Cannon said: “I just want them to strive for something greater than entertainment. I’m one of those believers in teachers, professors, heart surgeons. That’s what I’m rooting for. If I could get a scientist, that’d be amazing.”

UPDATE: When asked recently if he would like the adorable tots to audition on America’s Got Talent!, Nick said: “Absolutely not. That’s my personal feeling. But if you asked my wife, she would say, ‘Yes! Let’s sign them up next year!’  The thing that is great about this show is that you’re giving people who would never have an opportunity at stardom an opportunity. As a parent, and maybe because I’m a new parent, I am so protective and so sensitive and would never want anyone to judge my child.”

Nick concedes that if showbiz is something his twins really want to do when they’re older, he wouldn’t stand in their way.  Cannon said: “You catch me in 10 years and [if] my child is an amazing singer or drummer and says, ‘Dad, I want to do it,’ of course I am going to support whatever they want.”

Originally, we compiled this information after a friend asked for suggestions regarding the best acting and film camps in Southern California.  We suggested a few camps and schools but now each year we expound on that original list to showcase a variety of classes and camps to suit every taste. Additionally, requests have increased greatly for the best acting camp and acting class options across the country so we’ve included them as well. The list includes more than 90 of the best acting camps, prestigious acting classes and top acting coaches in the USA. For now the list is in alphabetical order but we will eventually have it sorted out by state and city.

The talented young cast of "The Hunger Games," in a recent Vanity Fair shoot, "have their feet on the ground," says Producer Nina Jacobson.

For those not familiar with Ms. Jacobson’s career, she’s one of a handful of powerful women (including Sherry Lansing and Dawn Steel), to have run a Hollywood studio, (Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group) and now helms her own production company Color Force, responsible for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and it’s sequels.

Producer Nina Jacobson Won the Option to "The Hunger Games" when it had only sold about 100,000 copies.

After reading The Hunger Games books, Jacobson immediately connected with Katniss (admittedly her favorite character); however, she realized there were many potential pitfalls in bringing the epic story to screen. Jacobson was intrigued that Katniss enters the games “looking after her own,” and not at all civic-minded but evolves over the course of the story into someone who trusts and cares for others (like Peeta and Rue), transcending selfishness and ultimately reaching an ethical line she won’t cross regardless of the consequences.

Jacobson believes this theme of selflessness is  a powerful one for today’s youth and following a month of discussions with author Suzanne Collins, optioned The Hunger Games. Remaining faithful to the story and not committing the sins of the capitol (Hunger Games speak for not glamorizing the voyeurism and violence) was Nina’s utmost goal.  The project finally landed at LionsGate because the studio had what she calls “a focused development plate.”  I personally love that she (along with Suzanne Collins, Gary Ross and the entire Hunger Games team) is adding a respectable heroine to our children’s cinematic library. “Young girls [as movie viewership] are a huge part of what makes a movie successful,” Nina says, “those who underestimate that [fact] do so at their own peril.”

When asked how the film differs from the book, she points out that we have more than just Katniss’ perspective in the film and that in order to streamline the storytelling some book characters lost out. “Poor Madge was thrown under the bus,” Nina recounts, noting that the impactful gift of the Mocking Jay Pin to Katniss is now Prim’s moment. She also relates that for purposes of time the focus was on Cinna (played by Lenny Kravitz) and not the entire squad of stylists. Other differences or substitutions include the film being shot on location in North Carolina (working as the Appalachian, the Reaping set, the Capitol and the Games) because the locales were “ridiculously perfect,” and of course there are the nice tax benefits the state offers.

Having accumulated a wealth of experience working in film and particularly with child actors, I wanted to know which qualities a producer of her measure looks for in young talent. “Naturalism and authenticity,” we’re her immediate answers noting that the last thing one wants a child actor to do is project “Look how well I’m acting!”

As the Producer of the Hunger Games, Jacobson says she was obviously seeking child actors with talent but also looks for kids (and their parents) “who have their feet on the ground.”  She believes she was doubly fortunate with The Hunger Games young cast, as their performances were organic and natural and they all come from strong families.

The Hunger Games opens nationwide on March 23, 2012 which is in all likelihood the first of four films to be made based on the trilogy. The second film is tentatively scheduled to release Thanksgiving 2013.

About The World Premiere:

Jennifer Lawrence wowed at the world premiere of "The Hunger Games," wearing a Prabal Gurung gown, Jimmy Choo shoes and Jacob & Co. black diamond studs.

Held at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles, the movie’s red carpet was actually black and gold. Turns out this color combo was perfect for enhancing Jennifer Lawrence’s shimmering metallic lame Prabal Garung gown that was akin to a custom paint job on a race car and I mean that in the best way possible. She was hands-down the most gorgeous person, man or woman, at the event. Other folks we spied walking the red carpet and or milling about the theater were Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus, Donald Sutherland, Gary Ross and Allison Thomas.

As I’m not a reviewer, here’s what I’ll call my “quickie recap:”

• Teens will LOVE this film – the kids in the world premiere audience were screaming the entire time. The entire time. Did I mention, the entire time?
• Read the books first – it will enhance the film for you and help the details make more sense.
• Jennifer Lawrence is a wonderful actress and nails the character of Katniss (I originally pictured Hailey Steinfeld in the role but Lawrence owns it).
• Other solid performances in The Hunger Games include: Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), Effie (Elizabeth Banks) Haymitch (Woody Harrelson.) and Josh Hutcherson (as Peeta Mellark – although I still think he was terribly miscast as the love interest). Sutherland is typecast as annoyingly evil (which works) & Stanley Tucci is campy fun as Caesar.
• For my taste, there was money missing onscreen in terms of production value (I had a couple of “Last Airbender” flashbacks) but the average 13 year old isn’t going to notice that. Director Gary Ross is faithful to the book, condenses a few scenes for streamlined story-telling, omitting only a few important moments.
• Surprisingly not too dark or scary considering it’s obviously dark subject matter. The book was much more graphic.
•  The most honest and accurate review I’ve found is here (the written review NOT the televised morning show – those people are completely out of touch). But ultimately you the viewing audience decide the fate of the film – grab a box of popcorn, enjoy and let us know what you think!

Child Star Kiernan Shipka Graces Grazia Magazine. Readers Ask, "Is Her Look too Mature for 12?"

She plays impeccably-groomed, wise beyond her years youngster Sally Draper on the hit television series, Mad Men, and some of Draper’s fashion joie de vivre has had an obvious effect on Child Star Keirnan Shipka. Dressed impeccably on every red carpet, the 12 year old Chicago-native admits to being fashion-influenced by her show, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelley and the show Gossip Girl. She will no doubt be giving teen actor fashion champs Choloe Moretz, Elle Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld a run for their money in a few short years to come.

When Shipka was recently featured in the European magazine Grazia (Highstreet Edition) the internet was abuzz with talk that it showcased a too-mature looking 12 year old. I disagree. This is a child whom has always courted fashion, holds herself with grace and dignity and looks absolutely lovely in Grazia’s photos. Her favorite designers are Chanel and Burberry for crying out loud. There is nothing risque about either picture, and anyone saying as much is out of touch with today’s more sophisticated youth. It’s a fashion spread and that’s always going to call for a more “mature” look than say an editorial piece about an afternoon she spent at Chuck E. Cheese. Just remember, Kiernan doesn’t dress like this when she goes to set school (I hope.)

When WoodstockWardrobe.com asked Shipka last fall about winning her role on MadMen she admitted, “It was a really basic process.  I saw a small description for a recurring character, I had 3 auditions, and then I got the call that the role was mine.  All I remember is screaming in the car.  It wasn’t my first role, but it was the first one with a chance for recurring scenes.”

In term’s of her character Sally Draper’s style Shipka says: “Sally’s style has pretty much stayed in the same theme, girly & preppy, throughout the whole show.  But as she gets older, her style is becoming more mature.  The wardrobe department spends a lot of time focusing on popular ‘60s trends for Sally, especially in the last few seasons.”

Her favorite red carpet ensemble thus far: The gold & metallic Balenciaga dress. "I loved the look and I felt really confident."

And for the big question, has the show influenced her fashion choices? “Yes, they really do inspire my everyday style. A couple of my dresses that I wear a lot are very Sally, with puckered waists that flare out at the bottom.  I also really love petticoats.  Basically, I adore the whole 1960s style. [MadMen] has already affected my style now, and I know it always will.  On the set, I pass through the racks and racks of vintage garments, from gowns to the handmade pajamas. I get to see the behind-the-scenes of fashion, which has a huge impact on the way I dress.

The young actress’s guilty fashion pleasure? “I am constantly on gossipgirlfashion.net.”

Anderson Cooper hosts veteran pageant girls as well as Toddlers & Tiaras' star, Alana, (Honey Boo Boo Child) Thompson (third from left) and all their mothers to discuss the controversial methods these moms use to motivate their children.

You’ve seen the recent onslaught of casting calls: “Non-Union Documentary Needs L.A. Moms,” “Villainous Stage Moms Wanted!” “My Talented Kid,” “Casting Opinionated Mothers of Child Actors,” “Do You Think Your Child is a Superstar?” and even one for the ultimately delusional parents, “YES, I Think My Child is a Super Star!”  But instead of hitting the SEND button on our email replies to this latest casting trend, seasoned Hollywood Moms are snickering in unison in our private chat groups, message boards, face book posts, tweets and asking each other in acting classes and audition waiting rooms, “What in the world are these people thinking?”

It would appear that “THEY” are thinking in terms of cold, hard cash and we have the success of TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras and the new Lifetime series Dance Moms (now at 2.5 million viewers) to thank for this latest casting phenomenon. I’ll be the first to admit my daughter and I have watched T&T with our mouths agape and our nervous laughter filling every corner of the room. Cliche’ yes, but it really is like watching a train wreck – you see it coming and yet absolutely can’t look away, all while knowing the results will be identical, week after week. Some go so far as to call these shows tantamount to child abuse.

From the looks of the multitude on “Mom-related” casting calls, my household isn’t the only one watching. T&T star Alana “Honey BooBoo Child” Thompson and her mother June Shannon have become a staple not just on Toddlers but on talk and news television in general thanks to their backwoods caffeine-concoction that BooBoo dubbed GoGo Juice (Seems lil’ Alana likes saying words twice ya’ll).  From Dr. Drew to Dr. Phil to Anderson Cooper to CNN’s Showbiz Tonight – every realm of media is cashing in on this cow.

Even T&T alumni Eden Wood (who retired from pageants at the age of 6 – what took her so long?) has landed her own reality television show “Eden’s World,” on LOGO TV, which will document her NYC quest to become “a star,” with mom, manager and publicist in tow. Fair warning – Eden’s mother Mickie actually utters the fateful phrase, “My baby is going to be the next Super Star!” in the promo clip.  I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.

When Anderson Cooper hosted several of the more notorious pageant moms on his talk show recently, the episode description read: “For the first time ever, the moms from the hit TLC show, “Toddlers & Tiaras,” are getting a pageant-style makeover. Complete with costumes and makeup, these moms will now experience firsthand what their daughters endure every time they are forced to compete. Will these mothers feel differently after walking in their daughters’ shoes?”

Momager Kris Kardashian makes the life of a Hollywood Mom look glamourous.

Oh Anderson, why? Why give one more second of attention to this growing trend of exalting the worst of the breed?  And speaking of negative attention, don’t even get me started on the documentary that aired on Showtime last night, “The Hollywood Complex,” inspired by the antics of residents in the short-term, fully-furnished apartments adjacent to Warner Brothers and Universal Studios, and I’m equally appalled by the footage I watched on HLN in which Alana “Boo Boo Child” Thompson is clearly under the weather but forced to sit on HLN’s set while her mom June defends having her young daughter perform in a bar to the show’s host.

We should have seen it coming years ago when Hollywood Mom Kris Kardashian made it look so glamourous, phoning in momager demands from her multi-million dollar home in gated Hidden Hills, while simultaneously running two retail stores and raising umpteen soon-to-be-reality-famous-kids.  This is not the norm people, nor is the common myth that all aspiring child actors and their parents hail from double-wide trailers located somewhere off I-287, in Dallas, until they ripen like fruit and are shipped via a magical pipeline to the folks at Disney. It’s all urban legend, folklore and rumor. Don’t buy into it.

So what are the real Hollywood Moms all about? Since television doesn’t have it right, I’ll tell you myself: Hollywood Moms love their kids and helps them pursue their dreams of performing (acting, signing, dancing) whether it be on stage, on camera, or in the backyard. A Hollywood Mom is equally inclined to assist her children with a number of non-acting pursuits like swimming, soccer, golf, chess, tennis, horse-back riding, debate team, stamp-collecting – you name it – but you’re not likely to hear about that on the nightly news.

Over the course of our journey in this community, we’ve encountered many intelligent parents who work just as diligently for their children’s education, socialization and extracurricular activities as they do for their acting careers. They run the gamut of types, ages, nationalities, ethnicities and social classes.  Professions of Hollywood Moms vary greatly as well; consultants, restauranteurs, photographers, music execs, marketing and PR professionals, police officers, bartenders, child advocates, fitness gurus, comedians, writers, lawyers, medical professionals, ex-military and more.

The majority of these moms (and dads) are protective, strict, involved, caring and devoted to a fault. Are they competitive? We probably have our fair share of Type-A’s in the Hollywood Mom crowd. Nutty? Sure, it happens. Poor Judgement?  A handful. Star-obsessed? I’ve heard the rumors but, just like the elusive Big Foot, I haven’t met one yet.

Over the past year I’ve been approached by numerous production companies to take Hollywood Mom Blog on the reality journey, and this onslaught of crazy casting calls and the sensationalism of the entertainment industry’s “fringe” element actual motivates me more than ever to do so, to get the truth out about the many balanced, professional, successful kids and families in this industry.  But until that time, it would appear that the “Hot Mess” is currently Reality Hollywood’s “Hot Commodity,” and will be the public’s perception of  Hollywood Moms for years to come.

Child Stars Kristy McNichol and Tatum O'Neal in "Little Darlings"

Actress and former child star Kristy McNichol, 49, has come out as a lesbian in an effort to help kids who are troubled by their sexuality and who are being bullied for being different.

 The former child star of 1980′s “Little Darlings,” and TV hits “Family” and “Empty Nest” dropped out of Hollywood and retired from acting in the 90′s after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Now she’s reaching out via her publicist to announce her own sexuality in hopes that it will help bullied teens.

McNichol’s has been living with her partner Martie Allen for two decades and according to her publicist Jeff Ballard,”[She] is sad about kids being bullied. She hopes that [her] coming out can help kids who need support. She would like to help others who feel different.”

Dakota Fanning

Many readers are crying foul that a young actress, known best for films like Charlotte’s Web and Dr. Suess’ The Cat in the Hat, is on this cover next to headlines reading “His Best Sex Ever,” “Too Naughty To Stay Here: But You Have to Try This Sex Trick,” and “Um, Vagina Are You Okay Down There?” But in all fairness, she looks beautiful if not entirely age appropriate in a mostly-cleavage-covering pink sequin gown. Reminder – Fanning will become a legal adult soon as she celebrates her 18th birthday at the end of February 2012.

Fanning is still legally a minor though which is why some outlets are raising issue with the placement of a 17 year old on the cover of a magazine well-known for pushing the limits of adult female sexuality. For those of you who recall Miley Cyrus’ Vanity Fair photo shoot a few years back – this seems tame in comparison to me. Living in Los Angeles, I’ve seen more provocative dresses at high school proms. I think it’s the not so much the photo people are struggling with as the Fanning-Cosmo affiliation.

HMB Readers may recall that Fanning raised eyebrows in a perfume ad for Marc Jacobs’ perfume Oh, Lola! just a few months ago which was eventually banned in the UK for sexualizing a minor.

Two child actors are making headlines via Twitter, one being 1990′s child star Alisan Porter (Parenthood, Curly Sue) and the other is aspiring child actor Damian Charles Hurley, none other than the prodigy of actress/model turned swimwear designer mom Elizabeth Hurley (Gossip Girl, Austin Powers).

Alisan Porter, a familiar face in the early to mid 1990′s, is in the news again after announcing via Twitter (@AlisanPorter) and via pictures on Instagram that she will become a mother for the first time in 2012; July 17, to be precise.

Nine Year old Damian on the other hand has just recently informed Elizabeth that he aspires to be a child star.

After her son spent the afternoon with Gossip Girl co-star Blake Lively at Serendipity, Elizabeth posted to her Twitter feed (@ElizabethHurley): “Oh lord, my son is begging me to find him an agent so he can become a child actor.”

According to the U.K.’s Daily Mirror, Hurley reported ”I was going to wrap late, Blake had wrapped early, and Damian was on the set. She asked, ‘Can I take him out?’ And they went to the Serendipity ice cream parlor and had a big sundae and a hot chocolate.”  Don’t worry Elizabeth – it may just be the sugar talking.

Maggie Elizabeth Jones

Due to popular request, I am reposting this 11/9/2010 post on child actor Maggie Elizabeth Jones.

According to IMDB, Georgia Native Maggie Elizabeth Jones is the latest child actor to be cast in “We Bought a Zoo.” As HMB reported, Colin Ford was cast as Dylan Mee a few weeks ago.

While it’s unknown whether Maggie was cast through the open call process announced in an earlier post, it seems highly unlikely as both she and her older sister Mary-Charles Jones have a list of professional credits that far outnumber their years.

Maggie and Mary-Charles are currently cast as sisters Amy and Sara Warniker in the remake of “Footloose.“ According to their mother Angela: “Maggie and Mary-Charles are very excited about Footloose. They get to play sisters in the film and are cousins of the lead actor. Not only do they get to act they get to sing and dance too. Fun Fun!!”

Mary-Charles also has a recurring role as the young Miley Stewart on the hit Disney show Hannah Montana. She’s featured in two episodes (“Hannah Montana to the Principal’s Office” & “Sweet Home Hannah Montana”).

The girls, who come from a devoutly Christian family in Georgia, are both represented by Cindy Osbrink and J Pervis Talent Agency in Atlanta, GA.

18 year old Laura Dern in SmoothTalk (1985)

Laura Dern’s parents’ are Academy Award nominated actor Bruce Dern and Academy Award nominated actress Diane Ladd, whom divorced when she was only 2.  You could say she was born into the business and you’d be right. However, she made her own mark early in a series of heavy projects like “The Stains,” and “Foxes” at age 13, “Smooth Talk,” at age 18 and David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” at 19.  Dern then graduated to lead roles in “Citizen Ruth,” “Wild at Heart,” “Rambling Rose” and “Jurassic Park.” Laura earned her own Oscar nod for “Rambling Rose.”

But although Laura began performing professionally as a young girl, Mom Diane Ladd was strict with her teen.

“Luckily for me I had both – with my grandmother and my mother particularly – both my parents, but I was living with my mom most of the time. (They had) a real longing to make sure I was very involved in school,” she said. ”So I was lucky in that for me it worked that I was never home-schooled. I was always in school, had to be involved in two activities or I couldn’t do a job. It was like swim team and president of whatever club or something like that, and classes and play dates and over-nights,” she says.

Dern continues: “I was also lucky, frankly, to start young but my mom really balanced it. Where there were a few things that meant a lot to me that she let me audition for, but didn’t push me to go out there. And she asked my agent not to send me on everything. So I just didn’t work that much. I wasn’t doing a series for five years as a teenager. I didn’t have to deal with severe high-visibility celebrity, which is a whole other level that I feel fortunate to not have had to walk through.”

Dern’s latest project, HBO’s “Enlightened,” premiered Oct. 10, 2011. She stars in the series with Mom Diane. Last week Dern was served with divorce papers from husband Ben Harper. They share two children Ellery, 9, and Jaya, 5.
