CLASS & CAMP: Acting for Film and TV Summer Camp at Actors Space West

Actors Space West is announcing a premier camp for young actors who want to work in film and television, or who want to have the experience of working on a professionally produced short film. During the two week summer camp session, days will be divided into a morning session and an after noon session.

Each morning campers will receive expert coaching in various areas of acting including:

Cold reading
Improv
On-camera work
Scene study
Audition techniques

After lunch, the second portion of the day will be spent rehearsing and ultimately, shooting a short film, directed, shot and edited by industry professionals who work in feature films, commercials and television.

1st session for Ages 8 – 14

DATES: JULY 9th – JULY 20th

TIMES: daily 9am – 4pm

PRICE: 650.00*

limited to 12 campers! A $100.00 deposit will hold your space. Deposit is refundable up until June 11th when balance becomes due.

2nd session Ages 13 – 18

DATES: JULY 30th – AUGUST 10th

TIME: daily 9am – 4pm**

PRICE: 700.00*

Actors Space West has a wonderful staff of professionals and offers a safe, stimulating and fun experience for all campers.

Approximately 4 weeks later the campers and their friends and families will be invited to the Exclusive PREMIERE of both short films, complete with our own paparazzi, screaming fans and red carpet interviews at a local first-run movie theatre!

I was recently invited to contribute to Jen & Barb Mom Life, (Jen Pate and Barbara Machen respectively) a fun website dedicated to sharing original online videos all about the challenges and joys of modern motherhood. Their most recent video clip is about how they encourage their children to pursue their passions. I shared my thoughts (via their blog) on the steps I take to encourage my daughter to pursue her talents like acting and (drumroll please) golf, answering that age old question “Do you bribe your kids?” with a resounding, “YES.”

The Hollywood Life: Mini Darth Vader Volkswagen Super Bowl Spot is a Family Affair

Hollywood is the only place I know where you, your kids, your pets and your property can all aspire to some small shot at fame. This adorable Super Bowl half-time commercial featuring *a pint-sized Darth Vader was shot in and outside of my in-law’s lovely Tarzana, California ranch home. Kind of ironic that when it debuts on the air for the first time during Super Bowl XLV we’ll be in that very same house for the Bobbitt’s annual Super Bowl bash. Life is often funny that way in La La Land.

* Darth Vader is played to perfection by 6-year-old Max Page, of San Clemente, CA, who is over the moon with the positive reviews of his new Volkswagen commercial entitled “The Force.” In the spot, Page repeatedly tries (and fails) to harness the power of the Force to manipulate objects around him while dressed in his best “Star Wars” attire. KTLA reports that when he was 4 years old, Page was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and currently has a pacemaker. More than seven million people have viewed this ‘Darth Vader’ commercial from Volkswagen online. Page plays Reed Hellstrom on “The Young and the Restless,” and is represented commercially ad theatrically by the Buchwald Talent Group.

One last piece of trivia that will bring us full circle – this home was once owned by former child actor C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders).

I love, love, love these kids. What a talent. In this brief interview, the kids give Jimmy Kimmel a run for his money and won’t let the host back him into any corners. It’s no secret at HMB, we love us some Selena Gomez! The highlight of my daughter Jordan’s day working on “Wizards of Waverly Place” last summer was the time she spent talking with Selena in Selena’s dressing room. It was the first time in Jordan’s short 10 years I’ve ever seen her speechless. Watching this tape of one of her early auditions, it’s notable that Selena is all ready very polished for 11 years old. Take note up and coming actors – this is a wonderful role model.

New Nick Show: Big Time Rush

Meet Carlos Pena, James Maslow, Logan Henderson and Kendall Schmidt — the stars of Nick’s newest show “Big Time Rush!”

In a special preview of Big Time Rush which aired November 28, 16-year-old Kendall, is discovered by washed-up record executive Gustavo Rocque (Stephen Glickman) during a nationwide casting call. The accidental rock star is then forced to choose staying home in Minneapolis with his buddies or pursuing a dream, singing career in Hollywood. Mmmm. Sounds like a hybrid of Jonas Brothers/Naked Brothers Band and “Entourage.” You guessed it – Kendall strikes a deal with the Hollywood image-maker, agreeing to undergo “pop group 101” training in exchange for giving his best friends – Carlos, James, and Logan – the opportunity to be in the band. The four teens travel with Kendall’s mom played by Challen Cates (btw – on a personal note congrats on landing this gig Challen!) and younger sister played by Ciara Bravo, from the Midwest to Los Angeles, where they move into the Palm Woods, a swanky temporary housing development where entertainment companies house their aspiring talent from out of state (think Burbank’s Oakwood Apartments).

The boys immediately learn that life in Hollywood doesn’t revolve around wooing starlets and raving at late-night parties, and that the clock is ticking away their time to prove worthiness to the record label big wigs. Do they have what it takes to make it in the music world? I guess we’ll learn more when ”Big Time Rush” premiere’s in early 2010 on Nickelodeon. My 10 year old daughter Jordan, who did watch the show, gives it the full blown Hollywood Kid approval.

I’m fascinated with this clip because it’s the perfect example of why young children need publicists and wranglers accompanying them in media situations. I don’t think Noah Cyrus (younger sister of Miley Cyrus) could have properly introduced herself to these interviewers or so quickly surmised her involvement in the Hannah Montana movie the way her publicist did. According to IMDB Noah plays “girl with ice cream.” We’ve all got to start somewhere. I get a kick when the publicist eventually realizes he’s in the camera’s eye line and discreetly moves away.
