American Idol’s Controversial Stage Mamas Direct “The Minors” to Group Night Victory!
Posted on 17. Feb, 2011 by Editor Tracy Bobbitt.
If you’re watching American Idol this season then you no doubt tuned in for the emotional train wreck event known as “Groups,” when the individual contestants are forced to partner up with the competition and make beautiful, harmonious music together. One of those singing groups,“The Minors,” is a quintet made up of 15- and 16-year-olds whose mothers, as required by law, are on set with them day and night. The group includes: Keonna Evans, 16; Jalen Harris, 15; Sarina-Joi Crowe 15; Felix Ramsey, 15; and Deandre Brackensick, 16. I found it refreshing to watch the moms of the minors work together harmoniously as they “directed” their cooperative and talented children through a Glee-like rendition of Queen’s “Somebody to Love.”
However not everyone got the warm fuzzys watching the stage moms in action and jealously reared it’s ugly head amongst some of the “over 18″ contestants, most notably a competing group who was set to perform the same Queen song as The Minors. The lead singer of the second group seemed particularly peeved and charged that the stage moms coaching was an unfair advantage. But seriously, although it may have been unfair, the whining over it was much more obnoxious than the offense itself.
The best part of the night was watching the mamas jump up and down enthusiastically as their teen songbirds blew the judges away with a near-perfect performance. Judge Jennifer Lopez even went so far as to say, “They just gave the performance of their life right there!”
How the stage moms relate to each other as the competition gets more fierce may be the true “show” to watch this season.

Momagers Gone Wild: Is Bret Michaels to Blame for Cyrus Split?
Posted on 03. Nov, 2010 by Editor Tracy Bobbitt.
Miley Cyrus admitted to media outlet X17 Online that she is saddened over her parents impending divorce and it’s rumored that her parents are “already bickering over how to handle their most valuable asset” which happens to be 17-year-old Miley who they co-manage. An insider also stated, “This whole situation has hurt Miley’s relationship with her mother – she’s definitely going to side with her father.”
The Cyrus split is rumored to have been initiated by Tish’s extramarital affair with 47-year-old reality rocker Bret Michaels. Michaels and Miley released a duet “Nothing to Lose,” which is when according to Us Magazine, Tish and the rocker “soon began carrying on an on-the-sly romance”.
Michaels’ representatives state “There has never been an affair or a fling.”

MOMAGERS: Life is No *Ice Cream* Cake Walk for Dina Lohan
Posted on 17. Jun, 2010 by Editor Tracy Bobbitt.
In trivial and unbelievable Momager/Child Star news today, the latest “scoop” at Carvel Ice Cream is that the Lohan Family’s Carvel Black Card has been Black-listed. For those unfamiliar, a “Black Card” grants the holder free Carvel ice cream for 75 years.
RadarOnline reports that Dina Lohan, the momager of tabloid staple and former child star Lindsay Lohan, claims that a Carvel ice cream shop employee reported her to the police after she used daughter Ali Lohan‘s free ice cream card. (Carvel states that the card was issued to Lindsay Lohan.) Dina went to a Carvel ice cream store in East Meadow, New York, to pick up a birthday ice cream cake for her son Cody’s 14th birthday party and wanted to use a special Carvel “Black” card which she believed guarantees her and her family “free ice cream for 75 years.” However, when Dina went to the ice cream store, she didn’t have her own card and instead used her daughter Ali’s card. “I didn’t think it be [sic] a problem,” Dina told RadarOnline.
Dina alleges that the Carvel employee grabbed her arm, took her Black Card and “held it hostage.” She further claims that the employee called the police who then sent over a police helicopter.
If this is true, about the police helicopter, all I can say is that people in Long Island take their ice cream very seriously. Very. Seriously. Or maybe they just hate the Lohan family.
The employee eventually returned the card, but refused to give Dina Lohan a free cake. Dina states that “it just shows how we get treated so much worse than regular people.” She says, “Just wait until Lindsay and Ali hear about this [...] when Ali gets back, I’m going to bring her in everyday to this store–and you can print that!”
CARVEL’S VERSION OF EVENTS:
In their own statement to the press today, Carvel Ice Cream said the following:
“As part of Carvel’s 75th Anniversary celebration last year, we issued 75 Black Cards to celebrities. These cards were issued in the celebrity’s name and require the card holder to be present at the time of use. Many celebrities have enjoyed their cards at our Carvel Ice Cream shoppes and have shared their excitement with being included in the celebration.”
(Editor: Please note that the following verbiage is clearly printed on the Black Card in question:)
“Unfortunately, the Lohan family has been abusing the card. While the card was issued in Lindsay’s name only, her extended family has repeatedly used the card without her present. At first, we graciously honored their requests while explaining that the Black Card was not a carte blanc for unlimited Carvel Ice Cream for the extended Lohan family and friends. After more than six months of numerous and large orders for ice cream, we finally had to cut off the card and take it back. Dina Lohan reacted badly and called the police to have her card returned. The police responded and did return the card to Dina with instructions not to use it again. This is an unfortunate situation where certain people feel entitled to use a celebrity’s name for their own purposes. We regret that the Lohan family is upset and hope this matter is put behind us quickly.”
Rest assured, it will only be a matter of minutes before we spy “Team Carvel” and “Team Lohan” t-shirts adorning teens at the local mall, although my money is on the former boasting better sales. Let’s just hope we can forgo the obligatory rubber bracelets emblazoned with “What Would Tom Carvel Do?” or worse yet, “What Would Fudgie Do?”

According to PopTarts, the deal has fallen through just months before the scheduled debut.
From a rep of Love My Shoes: Love My Shoes regrets to announce we are not moving forward with the Dina Lohan line of shoes at this time due to continued economic sluggishness and the prevalent mood of today’s shoppers. Love My Shoes and its President, Robert Yeganeh, wish Dina continued success in all her projects.”
But according to a rep for Lohan’s shoes, the star mom is still determined to accessorize the country’s feet. “There was a miscommunication over finances, this was too local and we need a larger partner,” said the rep. “We are currently exploring other options, and we will have another announcement soon.”

LoveMyShoes.com will stock Dina’s shoes which be available worldwide Mother’s Day (or Momagers Day as we call it here in Hollywood). Dina will make appearances as a shoe aficianado on both TV and radio commercials later this month.
“I’ve always loved shoes,” says Dina. “I think it stems from when I went to private school and had to wear a uniform; the only thing I could feel stylish about were my shoes.”
With all of her namesake shoes costing less than $100, Dina states: “These shoes are affordable, which is really important in this economy. It’s tough for everybody – even us.”

Former Child Star: Brooke Shields’ Aging Mother Falls Prey to the Tabloids
Posted on 23. May, 2009 by Editor Tracy Bobbitt.
After more years than I can recall, once infamous momager Teri Shields, 75, the mother and former manager of Brooke Shields, is making headlines again. Teri is perhaps best known as the alcoholic, mother/manager who exploited her beautiful daughter, child actress Brooke Shields, in sexually provocative and age-inappropriate films (Blue Lagoon, Endless Love) television shows and advertisements (Calvin Klein Jeans).
Until now, the extent of Teri’s recent fame was bashing her now-grown daughter and son-in-law in obscure interviews probably very few people read. Now, the elderly Shields is the apparent victim of exploitation herself.
According to various media outlets, some unsavory tabloid types checked Teri out of the assisted living facility she resides in and took her for lunch and a drive. Brooke is understandably furious. The tabloid reps say they were just “catching up” with an old friend: an old friend who suffers from dementia and happens to be the mother of one of the world’s most famous women. Yeah, right. The case remains under investigation but Brooke has stated that she intends to prosecute those involved to the fullest ectent of the law. You go, Pretty Baby!

Paul Petersen of A Minor Consideration: Protecting Children from their Parents
Posted on 06. May, 2009 by Hollywood Mom.
I thought I’d never write about or in anyway participate in the Octomom Madness that has swept the nation.
Recent events have proven me wrong, but I will speak of “her” only in the broader context of child protection and child labor laws. As Parents we should be our childrens’ advocates in life and as Momagers and Popagers we should be our childrens advocates on any set, even if that “set” is our “new home…acquired by unknown means.” Unfortunately, this is not always the case, hence the necessity of the Coogan Law and the child advocacy organization A Minor Consideration, created by former Mouseketeer child actor, Paul Petersen.
As employees, children fall under the provisions of the Revised Coogan Law which came into effect in the year 2000, thanks to the efforts of A Minor Consideration’s members, the combined theatrical unions, and with the full support of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The vote was unanimous and the Bill was signed into effect by the Governor. The main features of the Bill are these:
- Children employed in the broadly defined entertainment industry now own the money they earn. Their income is their individual property.
- All children must have a current State-Issued work permit.
- A blocked Coogan Account must be in place for each child who works and a portion of their income, 15%, must be saved until the age of majority.
- Infants below the age of six months may only work in two narrow time-windows…9:30 am to 11:30 am, and 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm…and must be attended by a welfare worker and a registered nurse…one each for every three infants under the age of six months.
Please read Paul Petersen’s full statement about his recent filing to protect the interests of a Southern Californian family of 13 children, all under the age of 8.

Living La Vida Lohan: Momager Sterotypes
Posted on 11. Apr, 2009 by Hollywood Mom.
Update: Before this blog posted yet another public fight was reported, this time between Lindsay and mother Dina at sushi hot spot Nobu, Beverly Hills. As usual, paparazzi were there to document every lurid moment.
The Hollywood Mom Blog intentionally refrains from reposting most reports of poorly behaved child stars and their dysfunctional parents – aka momagers and popagers. However, if we didn’t address the most recent madness involving momager Dina Lohan as reported here, here and here – then this blog wouldn’t be completely relevant for the parents of today’s child actors.
But instead of bashing Dina Lohan for what appears to be her latest misstep as both mother and momager, HMB is choosing to examine the ”bigger” picture – the pitfalls of being a famous momager or popager, not by their own merits, but rather famous for being “the mother of” or “the father of” a child star.
Like the iconic evil stepmother from childrens’ literature, the Hollywood Mom is ingrained in our shared subconscious. The typical Hollywood Momager portrait is that of a pushy, overbearing, task master out to improve her social life and social standing through the hard work of her child(ren) and at any cost; exactly the myth we try to dispel here at Hollywood Mom Blog. The stereotype can be perpetuated by father’s too, well-illustrated by the awful press David Archuletta’s popager received during last seasons’ “American Idol.”
But there are numerous parents of child stars who prove the cliche’ false on a daily basis. The patriarchs of the Jonas brood have managed to help their children excel while remaining completely under the radar. The same parenting props should be given to the momagers and popagers of former child stars Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Kristen Davis and many others. Chances are, you don’t even know these parents’ names and occupations, much less what they look like.
So which path did Dina Lohan take that led her to become possibly the most reviled and ridiculed momager in child actor history? And how can you as the parent of a child actor avoid traveling this same treacherous road?
Many of Dina Lohan’s circumstances, both within her control and not, uniquely qualify her to become a target. First and foremost, she is the mother of a well-known child star. Having a child who works in the business is different that a child who’s a “star” in the business. Odds are, even if your child is working frequently, unless he or she becomes a “star” you’ll never be in the unique position to become “hated.” Count that as a blessing.
It breaks down something like this: Lindsay’s stardom gave Dina the platform to speak her mind and garner tabloid attention. That platform quickly transformed into a circus side-show as nasty accusations were hurled to and fro between Dina and her then husband Michael; followed by rumors of verbal abuse, drug use and alcoholism. Lohan family arrests and jail time, both Lindsay and her father Michael, were fodder for the blood-thirsty tabloids. Media attention was continually negative. Lindsay’s flailing career was spiraling downward as the result of multiple romantic liaisons, drunken crotch-shots, co-stars speaking out on her poor work ethic, kidnapping charges and resultant DUI conviction – the list goes on and on and on and on.
What landed Dina the momager in the hot seat was her choice to become even more public during this chaotic time by launching a reality show that documented her “momager” lifestyle, starring herself and Lindsay’s less famous siblings. Either intentionally or not, she appeared to have placed herself in a position of authority on the subject of parenting; the extremely dangerous territory of “the role model.” Dina’s casual statements that she was “the white Oprah“ for her children and their friends appalled the tabloid press and news that her 15 year old daughter auditioned for a well-known porn director added fuel to the all ready raging media fire. What was left of Dina’s credibility as a caring mother was completely shot, the public had had enough with the Lohan clan and the ridicule reached a frenzy.
The moral of the story for the average momager is lay low; work behind the scenes; support your child in making good decisions about both life and career and remember above all else, this is your child’s experience and time in the spotlight, not yours.
As the parent of a child actor you’re burdened with this negative perception from the onset. It’s the choices you’ll make along the journey that will determine how the story ends. For the time being, the Lohan story is looking more like “Greek Tragedy” than “Happily-Ever-After,” but as we’ve repeatedly witnessed, the story isn’t over until it’s over. At the heart of it, Lindsay is a gifted actress with natural charm and I do believe Dina loves her kids. The Lohans could surprise us all yet.

TMI: Starla Efron fills Son Zac’s Stocking
Posted on 09. Mar, 2009 by Hollywood Mom.
Momager Starla Efron is in the news. In what can be categorized as ‘Too Much Information,” the LA Times, People Magazine and every other media outlet are reporting on the contents of Zac Efron’s Christmas stocking: an economy package of condoms, which is apparently the gift you need when you’re dating Vanessa Hudgens. Or at least that’s what Starla Efron surmized after seeing a picture of her son and Vanessa in what appeared to be a sex shop. While it’s commendable that Starla and Zac have such an open mother/son relationship, the “openess” is unfortunate news for Vanessa’s recovery PR campaign and for all of the children of the world who now know as well.
My TMI moment? Having the information blurb blasted over the car radio this morning with my 10 year old in the back seat, soaking in every word. I know Zac and Vanessa didn’t literally sign on to be role models, but that’s what being a Disney Star amounts to. Children as young as 4 and 5 look-up to the cast members of HSM. What do you think? Should they keep their more revealing and personal information to themselves for the sake of their young fans? Or should they enter adulthood with the world watching?
