Bethesda Centre is slated to close on May 31, 2012, unless it can raise $1.5 million dollars to bridge a funding shortfall and establish a five-year endowment fund for the home.

“As a teen, I was pregnant with Justin, alone and scared,” said Pattie. “Bethesda gave me the help I needed during that time and the skills to care for Justin as well. I want to make sure that other babies in the London area have a chance to survive and to achieve their dreams. It is so important to me that we save this home, since there is nothing else like Bethesda Centre around London, and without it, I don’t know where either of us would be today.”

The Bethesda Centre offers accommodations, counseling and support to teenage girls during their pregnancy and after the birth of their babies.  The home also includes an independent living program for parenting teenagers, as well as a childcare center.  Teenagers are provided a range of services, from learning parenting and life skills, to prenatal and postnatal care, education and counseling.

Casting director Donna Isaacson is seeking child actors to submit online video auditions for The Book Thief, the film adaptation of  the bestselling young adult novel by Marcus Zusak. Set during World War II, the book told from the point of view of DEATH, relates the tale of Liesel Meminger, a young foster child living in NAZI Germany who survives by stealing books and bringing them back to her foster father and others.

The film will be directed by  BAFTA- and Emmy Award-winning Brian Percival, director of the hit British soap Downton Abbey, based on a screenplay by Michael Petroni. Karen Rosenfelt (Twilight) is producing for Fox 2000. Production is scheduled  to commence summer 2012.

Donna Isaacson (127 Hours, The Crucible, Father of the Bride) is currently casting one boy and one girl, ages 9-14 years old. To audition, children must record a video in which they answer the question, “Why have you not done your homework?” Each video audition must include three versions of the answer: “a truthful, logical, and reasonable explanation; an outrageously over-the-top, made-up story; and a sad, emotional, real excuse that is almost too difficult to talk about.”

If you have a talented child actor and you decide to encourage them to follow their dream, then your role as CEO becomes even more important. You will be making both business and personal decisions that will affect your family’s journey into this business we call ‘show.’

I know moms who are very nervous about their children being in show business. All of you have read about famous show biz kids not living a normal life and ending up in trouble. The sensationalized stories take precedence over the kids who do lead normal lives, never get into trouble and remain in the business as adults. All my kids from my shows have made the right choices.

I am often asked why the kids I work with never get into trouble during the run of my shows or when a series ends. My answer? I train the parents! Parents, you need to know the show will end. Your child is not the family breadwinner. It is your responsibility to build a solid, normal foundation for your child.

Tia and Tamera Mowry of “Sister, Sister” and stars of their own reality show on the Style Network, had no preferential treatment growing up in front of the camera. I trained their mother to maintain a normal lifestyle: making their beds, vacuuming, taking out the trash, etc.

Jemima Laing (a Plymouth, UK Native) tells us how her son Felix Soper, now 13, was first bitten by the acting bug after landing a part in a theatre production of Peter Pan.

What got Felix started with this whole acting thing was, basically, my innate nosiness.

Collecting him and a friend from drama group on a wintry Plymouth night four years ago, I noticed the friend was clutching a piece of paper which Felix didn’t have.

Questioning the pair, Felix simply replied: “It’s about auditions for the panto Mum, I don’t want to be in the panto.”

Having spent my university years as a dresser at the city’s Theatre Royal, I knew enough to concur that, given his singular lack of singing and dancing ability, panto, that uniquely British institution, really wasn’t for him.

But I still wanted to read that piece of paper.

So as I deposited his pal outside his house I niftily wrested the sheet from him and gave it a quick scan.

Yes, there were auditions for the babes’ roles but, as the production was Peter Pan, the director was also looking for boys to play the speaking parts of the Darling boys.

The prospect of messing about on a pretend pirate ship, being hoisted some 20 feet off the ground every other night and twice on a Saturday, with the added bonus of missing a fair bit of school was like catnip to an eight-year-old ; Felix decided he might actually like to have a go.

So my father was roped in to give up the following Saturday to take him to the audition and to the surprise of us all – not least Felix – by the end of the day he had landed the role of Michael Darling, (a swiftness of timescale from initial audition to confirmation of role we have not encountered since).

So Pizza Express, our default destination for celebrating good family news, was duly visited, licences were sorted, costume fittings were arranged and a normal family Christmas holiday period of a fortnight of eating and precious little else was willingly jettisoned in favour of the demanding theatre schedule.

At his first night I found it impossible to believe my titchy boy would really be able to remember his lines and hold his own on that enormous stage in front of more than 1,000 people.

But hold his own he did, even when suspended a heart-stopping number of metres above the stage on his way to Neverland.

"What I will say is that an ability to remain consistently a precise half beat behind everyone else is a criminally underrated skill, there really ought to be a box for it on the Spotlight form."

The sole saving grace of seeing my firstborn dangling from a great height was that his precarious position prevented him from attempting the impossibly intricate dance routine taking place below.

On his return to terra firma a tiny bit of dancing was required in each show, but we try not to talk about that.

What I will say is that an ability to remain consistently a precise half beat behind everyone else is a criminally underrated skill, there really ought to be a box for it on the Spotlight form.

Unfancy footwork aside, he really enjoyed himself during the two-month run, even the drubbing he was quite rightly given by a chaperone for an unscheduled ad lib didn’t put him off.

I ticked him off for his antics too while secretly marvelling at his nerve, especially when Paul Nicholas, who was playing Captain Hook, decided to keep the off-piste contribution in the show.

And while he wasn’t bereft when it ended it was clear he had relished the experience.

There was general agreement in the family that he might have some talent and we decided we should try to find ways to let him do something similar in the future.

As opportunities for acting in our neck of the woods on the south Devon coast are pretty few and far between, I approached a couple of agencies in London on the off-chance.

To our amazement one offered to take him on and we clambered aboard that figurative rollercoaster on which all other parents of performing children are fellow passengers.

This metaphorical fairground ride has taken Felix all over the place during the past four years, most recently a part in feature film The Awakening which opened in cinemas earlier this month.

When I told Felix (who has been reading up on chaos theory) I was writing this article it was he who reminded me about the piece of paper his friend brought out of the drama class, murmuring mysteriously: “A butterfly’s wings, Mum. A butterfly’s wings”.

And while what has happened since is hardly akin to the unwitting creation of a tornado, that single piece of paper – which only my propensity for prying ensured I had sight of – has set us on a path which is proving interesting, thrilling, occasionally disappointing but most of all really good fun; yep, so far we’re all enjoying the ride.

Nickelodeon has just ordered 40 new episodes of their popular game show from the 1990s, “Figure It Out,” a show that celebrates kids and their often bizarre talents. Marjorie Cohn, president of development and original programming at Nickelodeon says, “In this internet age where kids are expressing themselves online, it feels timely to give them a TV platform to showcase those talents in a uniquely Nickelodeon way.”

The show will be hosted by “101 Ways To Leave a Game Show” host Jeff Sutphen. Four celebrity panelists must guess the contestant’s skill asking “yes” or “no” questions over three rounds, winning a prize after each round that the panel fails to guess correctly. If the panel fails to guess the guest’s talent, the contestant takes home the grand prize and the panel wins…slime!

Nick Cannon,  the adorable host of “America’s Got Talent,” recently told People Magazine he will “absolutely not” let his twins (with wife Mariah Carey), Moroccan and Monroe, follow in their parents famous footsteps.

Cannon said: “I just want them to strive for something greater than entertainment. I’m one of those believers in teachers, professors, heart surgeons. That’s what I’m rooting for. If I could get a scientist, that’d be amazing.”

UPDATE: When asked recently if he would like the adorable tots to audition on America’s Got Talent!, Nick said: “Absolutely not. That’s my personal feeling. But if you asked my wife, she would say, ‘Yes! Let’s sign them up next year!’  The thing that is great about this show is that you’re giving people who would never have an opportunity at stardom an opportunity. As a parent, and maybe because I’m a new parent, I am so protective and so sensitive and would never want anyone to judge my child.”

Nick concedes that if showbiz is something his twins really want to do when they’re older, he wouldn’t stand in their way.  Cannon said: “You catch me in 10 years and [if] my child is an amazing singer or drummer and says, ‘Dad, I want to do it,’ of course I am going to support whatever they want.”

The free tickets are good for tapings today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday). The tapings will last from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. They also have tickets for this Sunday, April 22, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

About Figure It Out!

Nickelodeon has just ordered 40 new episodes of their popular game show from the 1990s, “Figure It Out,” a show that celebrates kids and their often bizarre talents.  Marjorie Cohn, president of development and original programming at Nickelodeon says, “In this internet age where kids are expressing themselves online, it feels timely to give them a TV platform to showcase those talents in a uniquely Nickelodeon way.”

The show will be hosted by “101 Ways To Leave a Game Show” host Jeff Sutphen. Four celebrity panelists must guess the contestant’s skill asking “yes” or “no” questions over three rounds, winning a prize after each round that the panel fails to guess correctly. If the panel fails to guess the guest’s talent, the contestant takes home the grand prize and the panel wins…slime!

Gattlin Griffith at the premiere of "The Changeling (2008)."

Gattlin Griffith, 13, is a hard-working child actor, having previously appeared as Angelina Jolie’s abducted son in Changeling (2008); as a young Ryan Reynolds in The Green Lantern (2011); Couples Retreat; The River Why; The New Daughter and Blood Done Sign My Name.  He has also appeared in numerous TV shows: Unhitched (2008), Cold Case (2007), How I Met Your Mother (2007), and Monk (2007). Griffith has also wracked up an impressive commercial resume having worked for Disney Parks, Mass Mutual, Burger King, Yamaha and Home Depot.

According to his bio on TheRiverWhy.com, Griffith enjoys soccer, gymnastics, horseback riding, swimming, football and performing his own Stunts.He can been seen next in the “suburban nightmare” movie, Under The Bed.

Reitman has tried for months to find the right child for the role, which sources describe as the center character of the story.

In the script, written by Reitman but based on the novel by Joyce Maynard, a depressed single mom (Kate Winslet) offers an escaped convict (Josh Brolin) a ride in her car. As their relationship evolves, the action is portrayed as seen through the eyes of Winslet’s child (the role Griffith is in negotiations for).

Griffith is represented by Wendi Greene at Paradigm and Susan Curtis of Curtis Talent Mangement.

Paramount and Indian Paintbrush are backers, with Helen Estabrook, Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith producing.

With the new DLSE work permit website allowing online permit applications for our child actors, this familiar site to Hollywood Moms may become a thing of the past.

As Hollywood Moms, we’ve all been there (some of us more than once) – the last minute dash in 405 and 101 rush-hour traffic to (hopefully) make it to the Entertainment Work Permit Office in Van Nuys before they close.  As government institutions go, I must give the Work Permit office it’s due props as one of the most polite, well-run government offices I’ve encountered.  I’ve never had to wait more than 15 minutes and the staff is very friendly and proficient. However, the California Department of Industrial Relations just announced something I think we can all revel in – they will now allow child performers to apply for work permits online! No more wasted time! No more wasted gas money! No more scrounging through the bottom of my purse for quarters to feed the meter! And seriously – no more excuses about not having a valid and up to date work permit at all times.

The Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) Entertainment Work Permit site was launched on April 4, 2012, to provide a more convenient alternative to applying for an entertainment work permit in person or by mail, which were previously the only options. While the new system is only for first-time users as of now, let’s hope that this is taking us one step closer to a time when permit renewals are available online.

*Please note that parents who have previously applied for or currently have a valid permit for their kidlets are advised to wait until the new web page is fully functional before they attempt to renew permits online. The DLSE will be sending the permit numbers and link IDs, which are required to log in to the new system, to existing permit-holders via snail mail about 30 days before their permit expires.

So who needs an Entertainment Work Permit? Minors ages 15 days to 18 years old who wish to be employed in the entertainment industry in California must have an entertainment work permit issued by the DLSE. An entertainment work permit is valid for six months, and is renewable every six months, while a minor is under 18 years old. There is no fee for this permit although there was a threat of implementing a $50 charge not too long ago.

Temporary 10-to-15-day child performer permit applications can also be submitted online in California and New York, but New York does not currently allow online applications for its standard 12-month work permits.
