Long & Short Term Rentals for Hollywood Moms & Their Industry Kids!

As a Hollywood Mom, you know the pressures of organizing your child to go to auditions, acting classes, agency meetings, etc. Many of you may even have to travel great distances to meet all of these demands. If you’re traveling to a major city, such as New York or Los Angeles, for a few days or even for a few months, there are many more options than a hotel to consider for your accommodations.

One  up and coming site for assisting people with short term and long term rentals is Roomorama. Choose from over 300 destinations (even international locations) to browse for rentals; most are even furnished. You may find this to be a much more comfortable and cost saving way to live like a local in a city away from home. For your child(ren), this may be a great way to make them feel more relaxed, being in a home-like setting, and could help them perform better in important work settings.

The beauty of Roomorama is the plethora of pictures of each rental unit, a check-list of amenities, property information and rates. Payment for these accommodations can be made by any major credit card or PayPal account directly through the site. The host does not receive your payment until you check into the unit.

Conversely, if you’re a Hollywood Mom living in a city popular for filming, through Roomarama you can list your place as a” host site” to help other Hollywood Moms, while helping your own bank account in the process!

Know of any other great places to find a sublet? Feel free to share with all of our Hollywood Moms!

child hunger ends here

The statistics are alarming. One in four American children struggles with hunger.   According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 17.2 million children are at risk of hunger across the nation in communities that include rural towns; suburban neighborhoods and urban centers – making it clear that hunger is a harsh reality for many Americans  A staggering 23.2% of US Children live in food insecure households with the gravest meal shortages occurring in Arizona, Arkansas and in our nation’s capital, Washington DC.

Food. It seems so very basic to most of us but here are the hards facts about food insecure households:

46% of the client households served by Feeding America food banks report having to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel

40% of client households had to choose between paying for food and paying rent/mortgage

34% of client households had to choose between paying for food and paying for medicine/medical care

To combat this epidemic, ConAgra Foods®, in partnership with Feeding America®, is asking us, the consumers, to take part in a new initiative to fight child hunger with their “Child Hunger Ends Here” campaign.  Child Hunger Ends Here brings together some of ConAgra Foods’ best known brands (Healthy Choice, Hebrew National, Marie Calendars) as part of the largest cause-marketing program in the company’s history including this weeks television special on NBC.

On March 19, 2011, “Child Hunger Ends Here: A Special Report,” a 30-minute special hosted by Al Roker with Natalie Morales, will highlight the personal stories of families struggling with hunger and showcasing how Americans can work together to tackle this issue. (Check local listings for viewing times.) During the special, viewers can also participate in an online event which will shed additional light on the child hunger issue. By following #ChildHungerEndsHere on Twitter during the broadcast, participants can ask questions from an expert panel, as well as learn about ways to get involved. In addition, a series of PSAs will run in select areas highlighting key child hunger issues and the text to donate program.

ConAgra Foods® is a longtime, committed partner of Feeding America and we are incredibly grateful for the ongoing dedication to fighting domestic child hunger,” said Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America. “With one in four children across the nation struggling with hunger, we are in crisis right now. No American should go hungry, and we thank ConAgra Foods® for joining us in that belief and for raising awareness and support for Feeding America.”

The Hollywood Life: Mini Darth Vader Volkswagen Super Bowl Spot is a Family Affair

The Hollywood Life: Mini Darth Vader Volkswagen Super Bowl Spot is a Family Affair

Hollywood is the only place I know where you, your kids, your pets and your property can all aspire to some small shot at fame.  This adorable Super Bowl half-time commercial featuring *a pint-sized Darth Vader was shot in and outside of my in-law’s lovely Tarzana, California ranch home.  Kind of ironic that when it debuts on the air for the first time during Super Bowl XLV we’ll be in that very same house for the Bobbitt’s annual Super Bowl bash. Life is often funny that way in La La Land.

* Darth Vader is played to perfection by 6-year-old Max Page, of San Clemente, CA, who is over the moon with the positive reviews of his new Volkswagen commercial entitled “The Force.”  In the spot, Page repeatedly tries (and fails) to harness the power of the Force to manipulate objects around him while dressed in his best “Star Wars” attire.  KTLA reports that when he was 4 years old, Page was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and currently has a pacemaker. More than seven million people have viewed this ‘Darth Vader’ commercial from Volkswagen online.  Page plays Reed Hellstrom on “The Young and the Restless,” and is represented commercially ad theatrically by the Buchwald Talent Group.

One last piece of trivia that will bring us full circle – this home was once owned by former child actor C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders).

I subscribe to a great service in Los Angeles called Nixle, which sends out alerts from the LAPD headquarters about breaking crimes relevant to the area. It’s a great tool for determining when a specific area might be backed up with traffic due to a lock down or a crime of some sort – an essential tool for a Los Angeles momager who’s always on the road carting her kid from one audition to the next. Well, imagine my surprise when this Nixle message was sent to my phone this morning:

“A community message has been issued by the LAPD Headquarters, Wednesday February 2, 2011 7:46 AM PST

LAPD Detectives Investigate Theft of Necklace

Los Angeles: On January 22, 2011, a one of a kind necklace, valued at 2,500 dollars, was taken from a jewelry store in the Venice area of Los Angeles.

As part of the Grand Theft investigation, Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Area obtained a search warrant on February 1, 2011, for
actress Lindsay Lohan’s Venice residence, to search for the necklace. Prior to service of the warrant, the necklace was returned to Pacific Detectives.

The case is currently under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477). For full details, go to https://local.nixle.com/alert/4646780/?sub_id=454219″

People Magazine online further reports that Lohan continues to be on probation and remains under random drug testing in her ongoing DUI case. She faces a Feb. 25 progress review hearing and is also currently under investigation by Riverside County prosecutors for allegedly battering a Betty Ford employee.

Hollywood Mom Blog Parties with Elmo & Curious George at the PBS SoCal Launch Party at Jim Henson Studios

HMB Writer Michele Dahl with daughter Shelby and PBS super star, Elmo

On this beautiful, January day in Hollywood, my daughter Shelby and I had the pleasure of lunching with one of the most fabulous, endearing, furry celebrities in town… that’s right, Elmo himself!  Hollywood Mom Blog was invited to the Jim Henson Company Studios to celebrate the launch of PBS SoCal and all of the most fabulous stars were in attendance – Elmo from Sesame Street, Curious George, Sid of Sid the Science Kid, Buddy from Dinosaur Train, and Martha from Martha Speaks.

Once upon a time I dreamt of spending lazy afternoons poolside at the Chateau Marmont with hotshots from the Hollywood “It list.”  Now that I’m a mom, I’ve traded in my celebrity meet ‘n greet wish list for the company of life-size, plush characters. Sigh. I suppose I should appreciate it while it lasts because in a few short years, my 3 year-old daughter Shelby will be a tween and we’ll most likely be attending boy-band concerts and chasing down the Hannah Montana of the moment.  In any event, Shelby was thrilled to meet her favorite PBS television characters and this will be a day that we can both look back on with a smile.

KOCE has taken over as the top PBS station in Southern California and is now called PBS SoCal, and to celebrate the transition from KOCE-TV to PBS SoCal, Mel Rogers (President of PBS SoCal) and Lisa Henson (CEO of the Jim Henson Company) gathered all of our favorite characters from the PBS KIDS show roster for a performance, lunch and tons of fun.

PBS SoCal serves the Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and San Bernardino Counties in California with entertaining educational programming and award-winning children’s shows like Sesame Street, Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train. Shelby just loved being having her picture taken with her favorite monkey, Curious George, and this mama was thrilled at the chance to be photographed with the one and only Elmo and puppeteer Kevin Clash. I mean really… who doesn’t love Elmo?! Even celebrity mom Megyn Price brought her daughter out to join the festivities!

Hollywood Mom Blog would like to thank PBS SoCal for including us in such a fun-filled afternoon at the Jim Henson Studios. Our readers and their kidlets will definitely be tuning into PBS SoCal for all of their beloved children’s shows!

HMB Writer/Reviewer Michele Dahl is mom of pint-sized models Shelby and Cash Dahl. You can follow her on Twitter too at @Elle_Renee

As reported a couple of weeks ago, HMB covered and attended the premiere of  “The Nutcracker in 3D.” Until last week, my strongest memories of the evening were of my wonderful HMB entourage who assisted in every way possible to make the coverage a success, Elle Fanning’s graciousness and incredible poise on the red carpet and the watchful eye of Fanning’s agent Cindy Osbrink, (rep of both Fanning sisters, Atticus Shaffer and Colin Ford among others) whose demeanor with her client was so protective and motherly that I actually mistook her for Elle’s mother Joy.  Only when I reviewed my photos later in the evening did I realize I was talking to none other than the iconic Osbrink herself. Oops.

Now those three memories are in strong competition with this singular one:  I was quoted for the advertising campaign which has appeared in the Los Angeles Times daily since last Wednesday.  I’ll admit it has me on a Siskel and Ebert or Ebert and Roper kind of high (Two thumbs up!), an experience and honor I never desired but now that it’s arrived, is pretty cool.  That’s it – just wanted to share another amazing adventure on this ride of being the Hollywood Mom and to thank all of you for joining me.
