The 2015 JOHN L. DALES SCHOLARSHIP competition for SAG-AFTRA child actors, performers and their dependents is now open. Apply now!
Deadline for your submission is March 16, 2015.

Many of our child actors are beginning to research universities and some of them are all ready awaiting acceptance letters for Fall 2015. As the parents of child actors we can use every bit of financial help there is for this next educational phase; fortunately, the SAG Foundation offers some assistance.

SAG Foundation’s John L. Dales Scholarship Fund was created in 1973 in honor of the Screen Actors Guild’s longtime Executive Secretary of the same name. Since its creation, the Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships to 1,730 SAG-AFTRA performers and their dependents. Many of our SAG-AFTRA kids qualify!

There are two types of John L. Dales Scholarships:

Standard scholarships are awarded to eligible SAG-AFTRA performers and their dependents for study at accredited institutions of higher education;

Transitional scholarships are awarded to eligible SAG-AFTRA performers interested in pursuing related professions within the entertainment industry or changing their career paths.

Important to note about qualifying for the scholarships:

  • An applicant must be a SAG-AFTRA member or dependent of a member.
  • A SAG-AFTRA member applying for the Standard Scholarship under the age of 22 must have been a member in good standing for five years and have a lifetime earnings of $30,000 within SAG-AFTRA jurisdiction.
  • The member parent or guardian whose dependent is applying for the Standard Scholarship must have 10 years of vested pension credits OR a lifetime earnings of $150,000 within SAG-AFTRA jurisdiction.
  • Dependents of SAG-AFTRA members who are 26 years of age and older are not eligible to apply.

Dales Scholarship for Child Actors

John L. Dales Scholarships are granted for study at accredited and licensed universities, colleges, junior colleges, adult specialty schools and trade/vocational schools. The number and amounts awarded are determined annually by a committee of the SAG Foundation.

The John L. Dales Scholarship Fund is available for eligible SAG-AFTRA performers and their dependents and made possible through gifts, grants and sponsorships. The SAG Foundation never draws on SAG-AFTRA dues or initiation fees.
